I love watching movies especially animated Disney features. It is completely un-childish of me if you want to go to that direction; it is absolutely the opposite. Almost all Disney movies carry a great theme, a great lesson and a path. The latest I watched a couple of days ago was Oscar-nominated Wall-E, about a cute garbage-collecting robot that lives on Earth after all humans have left a mess on the planet and flee to space. Wall-E is left behind as the last garbage-collecting robot on a garbage-ravaged planet. He is left all alone in his Sisyphean task (except for a pet roach he has adopted) until one day a more advanced plant-inspecting machine called Eva lands on Earth to check if plant life has returned to the dead planet.
The movie is more than great. To me the greatness was in the idea of how humans were depicted living on the huge spaceship in space, waiting for earth to heal itself of the pollution the people had left behind. The people at Pixar, which produced the film, depicted the spaceship as a giant interstellar luxury cruise ship with all the amenities. At hand, is food, entertainment, TV and a vast line of robots that served the people of the space colony.
Humans were pictured living in a Utopian-like place, with one fault: Each man or woman, who have become grotesquely obese for lack of physical activity, sit all day on floating recliner chairs surrounded by electronics that feed and entertain them by the ship’s central operating system that becomes the nemesis in the film.
Wall-E, who pursues his love Eva across space, ends up helping the people living in their Utopian slavery return to earth to begin to fix what they have done to the planet.
If you have the luxury of the time, I would highly recommend you watch the movie Wall-E.
Dear Nadia,
I have noticed Google has started a new system to translate Web pages in seconds. I have always wanted to read Arabic websites. Can you please recommend some sites for me? Thank you. — Christopher Kart, London
Dear Christopher,
If you are looking for Arabic sites I would recommend a few: Al-Arabiya, Elaph and AlFozan. Good luck!
