QUNFUDA: Police arrested two suspected drug smugglers after their Toyota Land Cruiser overturned on Al-Katheer Road, east of Qunfuda in the south of the Kingdom.
Police said the two Saudis were carrying an unspecified quantity of drugs and 14 illegal migrants.
“Smugglers generally use Al-Katheer Road because there are few checkpoints on the mountainous route,” said a police spokesman.
“After the vehicle overturned, the two men fled to a nearby mountain. An eyewitness who saw the vehicle overturn contacted the police who followed the two men to a waiting jeep, which then sped off,” he added.
Police pursued the vehicle to a checkpoint where it hit a parked police car.
“One of the passengers then tried to flee on foot but was arrested. Officers managed to stop the car at the next checkpoint. The driver of another vehicle tried to save the smugglers by ramming the police car,” he said.
“Police chased the men and arrested them after a brief exchange of gunfire,” he added.
