DUBAI: Work has started on an environmentally friendly sewage treatment plant in the village of Masafi, Dubai. The membrane sewage installation will serve around 2,000 people and provide a source of high quality water.
UAE conglomerate Al Ghurair Group and Japanese electronics Hitachi are behind the project.
High-ranking representatives from both companies including Al Ghurair Chairman Abdullah Al Ghurair and President of Hitachi Plant Technologies Ltd. Masaharu Sumikawa were in the village to launch the scheme.
Residents currently use sewage tankers to transport waste from the village to a remote plant and also rely on tankers or wells to provide water for daily use.
“This is one of our many initiatives to do something good for the local community and the residents of Masafi Village. We also want to value our natural resources and introduce an environmentally friendly highly advanced technology for waste water treatment in the area,” said chairman of Al Ghurair Foods Essa Al Ghurair.
The plant uses Hitachi’s Membrane Bio Reactor technology, which aims to provide high quality treated water and a reduced carbon footprint.
Al Ghurair and Hitachi have already established a joint company for water recycling in the UAE, using the same technology to produce high-grade industrial water.
It followed Abdullah Al Ghurair’s visit to Japan in May this year to build on the existing partnership between Al Ghurair and Hitachi Plant Technologies.
The plant is expected to be completed in four months time.
