NEW DELHI: Indian cinema’s mega star Shah Rukh Khan, tennis sensation Sania Mirza and lyricist Javed Akhtar, who has been nominated by President Pratibha Patil as Member of Parliament, joined persons from various walks of life together at the historic India Gate memorial for the Unknown Soldier in the capital to mark a special event, A Nation in Solidarity Against Terror, to commemorate the Mumbai terror attacks on 26/11.
The 60-minute event organized by the Indian Home Ministry was specially organized for Nov. 29, the day last year the siege of the terrorists ended. The awe-inspiring function was hosted by actress Nandita Das.
Shahrukh Khan said, “Indian civilization does not distinguish in terms of religion and it celebrates the uniqueness and absorbs all differences and faiths in its blood. We are not just an example to ourselves, but we are an impossible achievement in the world and that is why I am very, very proud to be an Indian.”
While Javed Akhtar recited a poem specially composed to mark 26/11, Sania Mirza invoked Rabindranath Tagore's famous poem, Where the Mind is Without Fear, to express her support for the fight against terrorism. Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bhindra said, “We are nearly a bomb away. I understand the sense of disparity but we cannot afford it and being a sportsman, I believe that life is all about winning.
