MAKKAH: As part of the first phase of the construction of the new King Abdul Aziz Road in Makkah, people in 535 houses were evicted on Thursday.

The electricity and water connections to the houses were disconnected over the past few weeks. A total of 3,700 houses will have to be demolished in six undeveloped districts between the Al-Hafayer, west of the Jabal Omar project, to Jurham Street. The districts to be demolished include Al-Hindawiyah, Al-Zaharayn, Jabal Ghurab, Shari Al-Mansour and Al-Rusaifa.

Makkah Mayor Osama Al-Bar said all deserving people would be compensated after the Assessment Committee looked into the losses. He said Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal was following on a daily basis the payment of compensations to the owners of properties. Muhammad Al-Qanawi, director general of the firm developing the project, said the company scrutinized all the property documents in two districts as a first move toward compensation payments.
