The aim is to realize the vision of Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, who wants to see the phrase "Made in Makkah" written on local goods for pilgrims and visitors, it was announced on Monday.
Chairman of the committee, Hisham bin Abdul Aziz Al-Sayed, said the new company would open up new opportunities for businessmen and investors in Makkah. It will also help supply the local markets with products for pilgrims and visitors.
He said the idea would be presented to the chamber's board of directors for final approval. The committee will also address affected authorities after outlining the proposed company's investment benefits.
Committee member Nabeel Yahya Al-Dahlawi suggested forming the company, which will establish factories to manufacture gifts and souvenirs, including prayer rugs, small suitcases, garments, silverware and small edifices carrying pictures of Makkah and Madinah.
He expected the new company to provide employment opportunities for more than 5,000 people. He said pilgrims and visitors annually spend about SR20 billion in Makkah, including SR5 billion on gifts and souvenirs alone.
