Croatia - the 2005 Davis Cup champion - already reached quarterfinals Saturday, when Marin Cilic and Ivo Karlovic defeated brothers Nicolas and Giovanni Lapentti in doubles.
Last year, Croatia was ousted in the semifinals by the Czech Republic.
Croats will next face either Serbia or the United States.
Serbia currently leads 2-1.
Croats made it clear they'd prefer to meet Serbia - its neighbor and arch rival in politics and sports - mainly because the matches will then be played at home.
The 22-year-old Veic was making his debut in Davis Cup.
In another reverse singles, Croatia's Ivan Dodig is playing against Ivan Endara.
