The inspectors, who inspected 208 shops, found that the most common violations were a refusal to Saudize jobs and a lack of valid licenses.
“The municipality will not be lax in enforcing regulations in jewelry shops,” Bashir Abu Najm, director of the Commercial Licensing and Monitoring Department at the municipality, said on Sunday. He urged jewelry shoppers to call the municipality’s operation center on 940 if they notice any violations.
The statement added that the municipality had issued 12,558 health cards for food and hygiene workers last month. It also said 77 licenses were issued to foreign investors for real estate and commercial establishments.
Abu Najm said municipal inspectors cooperated with Health Ministry officials while inspecting clinics, health centers and perfumeries. The 28 establishments they inspected had not broken any rules. They had also inspected four medical warehouses.
However, they found a shop that sold the banned substance aluminum phosphide.
The inspectors also discovered violations in 120 out of the 221 tire shops they inspected. While 65 of them were fined, the remaining shops promised not to repeat the violations.
Their crimes included the sale of used or outdated tires, tires without a date of manufacture and goods of inferior quality.
