STC, Mobily and Zain said they have not been instructed by the Communication and Information Technology Commission (CITC) to stop the service, adding that they have only heard about the issue through the media.
Last week, Arab News reported that CITC has asked Canada-based Research In Motion (RIM), the company behind BlackBerry phones, to allow the telecommunications regulator access to monitor messages sent by BlackBerry Messenger — a service that allows owners to share photos, videos, SMS messages and voice tones.
RIM is investigating the matter and will provide an update once further information is available to share. A CITC spokesman refused to comment and said the media would be informed of any developments.
