The 9-1 chance took up the running turning into the straight and comfortably held off Khyber Kim (7-1) by three-and-a-half lengths with Zaynar (15-2) third of the 12 runners.
Binocular finished third in the race when favorite last year to Punjabi and had lost two of his three races this season.
Last month he was effectively ruled out of Tuesday's event with a muscle problem but trainer Nicky Henderson managed to get the horse right in time for noted Irish owner JP McManus.
McCoy, 14-times champion jockey, told Channel 4 television: "The other morning I schooled him and that was the first time he hurdled like I know he can." Henderson said: "We've always had faith in him but it has not been an easy passage." McManus said: "There's been a lot of work done by a lot of people." The disappointment of the race was 11-4 favorite Go Native, trained in Ireland by Noel Meade. The seven-year-old finished a well beaten 10th, missing out on a 1 million pound ($1.5 million) bonus after winning two earlier races this season linked to the Champion.
The highlight of the Cheltenham Festival is the long-awaited re-match in Friday's Cheltenham Gold Cup between titleholder Kauto Star and 2008 winner Denman.
