Greece's latest debt problems and a drop in consumer borrowing are raising concerns about the economy Wednesday.
Analysts are also saying the market was due for a pullback after two months of nearly uninterrupted gains.
The Dow Jones industrial average is down 72 to close at 10,898. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 7 at 1,182.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 6 to 2,431.
About two stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume came to 1.2 billion shares compared with 936.2 million Monday.
