Machado wins time trial at Circuit de la Sarthe; Armstrong quits race

Machado clocked 8 minutes, 26 seconds for the 6.8-kilometer (4.2-mile) course in Angers. He beat race leader Luis Leon Sanchez of Caisse d'Epargne by two seconds. France's Anthony Roux was third, six seconds back.
Armstrong came down with a “viral intestinal infection,” Team RadioShack said in a statement, and will soon return to the United States.
Sanchez leads Machado overall by eight seconds. Roux, who rides for Francaise des Jeux, is third, 13 seconds behind.
Earlier, Anthony Ravard of France won the 97-kilometer (60.3-mile) trek from Varades to Angers.
