“The contractor expects the electricity company would take necessary steps to move the high-tension lines,” said Saeed Bafehaid, director of bridge and tunnel projects at the Jeddah municipality, said in a statement recently.
The municipality is coordinating with the contractor to divert traffic to nearby service roads and not to close the main road, he told Al-Madinah daily in a report on Thursday.
Bafehaid observed that traffic issues in Jeddah, with more than a million cars making six million trips every day, were more complex compared to other cities of the Kingdom.
“The new bridge and tunnel projects will play a major role in easing the city’s traffic movement, which is expected to grow as the population is projected to increase from the present three million plus to 10 million plus in a few years,” he said.
He said the cost of the new bridges and tunnel projects in the city stood at SR5 billion.
“Projects worth SR1 billion at 22 intersections are currently under way. While SR1.1 billion works are in the stage of bidding, 35 projects worth SR32 billion are in planning and designing stages,” he said.
