Volcano forces German Chancellor Merkel to divert

Merkel had been scheduled to land Friday afternoon in Berlin after a trip to Washington and California.
The government said that, because of airspace restrictions and weather conditions, her plane would land instead in Lisbon. It said the government plane won't be able to continue its journey until Saturday lunchtime because of rules stipulating breaks for the flight crew.
The German Embassy in Lisbon was working on accommodation for Merkel and her delegation.
Many of Germany's airports, including in Berlin, were closed Friday.
