“The center will be expanded to meet the needs of informal learners,” Surin Jema, acting consul general of Thailand, said on Sunday.
“The community has felt the need for expanding the scope of the institution with more funds, as there is tremendous demand from the community as well as from some other expatriate residents.”
With a view to raising funds for the center and charity work, the Thai consulate organized a charity food bazaar in cooperation with the Thai Community Club in the Western Region at the residence of the Thai consul general.
The event, labeled “Songkran Day Festival” — also called a splashing water festival, marks the Thai New Year. More than 1,000 Thai and other expatriates, from Makkah and Taif as well, participated in the festival.
Alongside cultural shows staged by Thai students, a variety of Thai dishes and delicacies prepared by members of the community were on offer.
“Entire proceeds of the festival will go to charity and the center,” Jema added.
Thai residents of Makkah and Jeddah won the prizes offered as part of the event by the consulate staff, members of the community and Thai enterprises, as well as Qatar Airways.
