The proposal is to be mooted by committees studying the expansion of the Grand Mosque. Expanding the mosque without pillars would give worshippers a clear and unobstructed view of the Kaaba and help maximize space.
The first phase of the new design will provide space for over two million worshippers, a number that will go up to five million on completion.
The new design will make expansion work possible without disrupting the existing building or obstructing the movement of pilgrims and worshippers inside.
The existing traditional gates of the Grand Mosque will also be preserved and the Islamic architecture of the mosque will be kept intact.
The new design includes the building of further floors with steps leading to them, and 18-meter high doors, which will be closed during the quieter seasons and opened during peak seasons to provide more space.
The design consists of numerous prayer halls that resemble people in prayer. The Grand Mosque will be easily accessible from surrounding areas. The entire building will be shaded and thermal engines will keep the Grand Mosque cool.
