“The import and distribution of electrical appliances that are not energy efficient is banned because of two reasons: The authorities want to support the national economy by reducing the consumption of energy and also help citizens save on electrical bills,” Abdul Mohsen Al-Youssef of the SASO told Arab News on Sunday.
The official pointed out that about 70 percent of the estimated wasted electricity is attributed to inefficiencies linked to air conditioning and refrigerators. At the same time approximately 60 percent of domestic electricity consumption is linked to these appliances.
Domestic residences eat up an estimated 40 percent of the Kingdom’s electrical power.
Consumer appliances will be required to display a card giving and energy-efficiency rating of between one and six stars, with six stars being the most energy efficient.
The official urged consumers to replace their old appliances with energy-saving ones, or at least change old compressors in their air conditioners and refrigerators.
