Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the passing out parade of the 118th course of the National Defense Academy (NDA), Anthony said: "As of yet, the federal government has not made any decision to deploy the army in operations against the Maoists. Discussions in this aspect are being held at different levels in the government and all aspects are being examined from all angles after which a decision will be taken. The army is prepared to implement and execute any order given by the federal government," he said.
To a question whether the government was delaying taking any firm and strong action against the Maoists due to differences in the government itself, Anthony replied in the negative.
Clarifying that there were no differences in the government on the issue, Anthony said, "Since talks at different levels are being held on the Maoists issue, no decision has yet been taken on using the army. Once a decision is taken, it will be immediately implemented. Like terrorism, a different set has to be formed to tackle the Maoists and face their threats, and a separate force to counter the Maoists is necessary," he added.
Anthony did not clarify the government stand on the background of the Maoists attack on May 28.
Answering another question, Anthony said: "The internal security shortcomings have been addressed after the Mumbai terror attacks on November 26, 2008 ... even though there has been an increase in the attacks by the terrorists and Maoists, the Indian defense forces with modern arms and equipment are in a full state of preparedness to counter any situation."
Meanwhile there have been no changes in the strength of armed forces personnel in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In future, more advanced and hi-tech Russian built aircraft will be added to the Indian Air Force fleet, Anthony said.
