State Department spokesman Mark Toner also told reporters Friday that the United States is worried deeply about a decline in political freedom and severe restrictions on freedom of expression in the North African nation.
A Tunisian appeals court this week upheld the sentence of Fahem Boukaddous, a correspondent for the satellite TV channel Al Hiwar Ettounsi.
The reporter was accused of "broadcasting information likely to disrupt the peace." Media advocacy groups and lawyers for Boukaddous say the charges were brought to punish him for doing his job.
