When the young woman realized this shocking reality, she refused to lead a married life with him. However, the young man was successful in convincing her family, who in turn pressurized her to accept him. She eventually relented.
The young woman works for an English language institute in Makkah. Her worst fears came true immediately after she started to live with him.
All dreams of a successful and happily married life were shattered with each passing day. She soon became a victim of torture and violence. She received blows and kicks and other forms of physical assault frequently.
Now their divorce case is being heard in a court. A primary court in Makkah is currently examining the khula’a petition filed by the woman.
In seeking the court’s intervention to put an end to her ordeal, the young woman accused her husband of having subjected her of all sorts of physical assault and even disfigurement. She had also been driven out of his home, forcing her to return to her family.
When the consultant physician at a medical center in Makkah asked her about the bruises and marks on body, she burst into tears. The young woman, who was almost on the verge of a nervous breakdown, recounted her nightmare of living with the mentally deranged man.
Her life with the sick man for a period of three months was a harrowing experience. Every now and then, he used to beat her up and blame her for the minutest things. At last, she fled home after his threat to drive her out.
Why does this happen? What prompted her family to marry her off to this abnormal man? What was the reason for this? Why did they let the couple live alone in a house even though the family knew about his illness? I don’t know what their thinking was.
The only plus point in this story is that she managed to come out of this difficult situation. We heard about her plight after newspapers covered her story. A number of agencies came forward, taking the initiative to support her cause. Is there such a safe exit for other women?
