The twins, named Zainab and Ruqiya, who were born on June 5, were brought to Riyadh on June 25 on directives from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.
It was revealed that the twins needed the surgery urgently following a series of clinical tests conducted by the paramedical team headed by Al-Rabeeah.
They are conjoined in the pelvis area. They also have deformities in their heads. “The case of the twins is rare and complicated,” the minister said, noting that Ruqiya suffers from a deformity in the head that makes breathing difficult for her.
She was subjected to artificial respiration, he said, noting that this problem may make it difficult for her to survive and threaten the life of Zainab. “Zainab is in a stable condition but she suffers from problems in her brain and spinal cord,” Al-Rabeeah said.
“We have explained the situation to the twins’ father,” he said, adding that the chance of survival for Ruqiya was minimal.
The twins’ father, Naseer Muhammad Hassan, has approved the operation to save the life of Zainab, Al-Rabeeah said.
