Maharashtra delegation to meet PM on border row

Maharashtra Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil, who made this announcement in the assembly on Tuesday, said the delegation would brief the premier on the dispute between the two states and the two states' respective stands.
On the second day of the monsoon session of the assembly, legislators raised slogans and condemned the cane charge by the Karnataka police on the activists of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti at a protest rally in Belgaum on Monday. While majority of the legislators were condemning the Karnataka government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators condemned the Congress party-led United Progressive Alliance government for not solving the border dispute.
Following the chaos that prevailed in the house, the speaker adjourned the house for 10 minutes. As soon as the house assembled again, the legislators again raised slogans and did not allow the house to function. The speaker then called a meeting of the leaders of all the parties and informed them that an all-party delegation would meet the prime minister on Wednesday.
Chavan while speaking in the legislative council said that he was of the opinion that Belgaum should be a federal government administrated area till the Supreme Court gives a verdict on the dispute. The view was backed by Shiv Sena Working President Uddhav Thackeray.
In related development, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena workers attacked and damaged 23 buses of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation in Thane, Pune, Latur, and Solapur in retaliation of mobs damaging 18 buses of Maharashtra State Transport Corporation (MSRTC) in Karnataka. Irate mob of the MNS workers smashed the front and rear windows of the buses and set one bus on fire. The MSRTC announced that it has halted bus services to Karnataka state for two days.
In another development, Vasant Davkare was unanimously elected deputy speaker of the legislative council on Tuesday after the lone opposition party candidate Kiran Pawaskar withdrew from the contest.
Davkare who contested the election as an independent candidate received support from the Shiv Sena. Pawaskar a Sena candidate supported by the opposition parties withdrew at the last moment.
