Consul General Kate Rudd along with other consular officials handed Malpeli his document recently at the consulate in Jeddah. With his ETD, Malpeli returned to the UK shortly afterward.
Any British national who needs to travel urgently and does not have access to their passport can apply for the ETD, which is valid for a specific journey within a specific period of time.
"These new documents mean that British citizens who need to return to the UK will always be able to do so even if their passports have been damaged or have gone missing," said British Embassy spokesman Nick Heath.
"I would urge British nationals to keep in touch with the embassy by registering on our locate service and following our UK in Saudi Arabia Facebook page and Twitter channel."
