Many Saudis in Makkah and surrounding areas are keen to drink Sobia in Ramadan, even though it is available all year round.
Muhammad Saleh Amboun told Arab News that he has been making his high-quality Sobia for more than 30 years.
Saudis living in Makkah or visiting the city are keen to drink his Sobia, known as the “Ibn Al-Wahhaj Sobia.” The second most famous version of this beverage in Makkah is the Al-Khudairy Sobia.
Amboun said his sons also share his love for Sobia and prepare it themselves despite the fact that they have obtained university degrees.
“I have a son who is studying engineering in the United States, but when Ramadan comes he makes it a point to spend the month with us and help us prepare Sobia,” he said.
According to him, there are three kinds of Sobia, including:
• The red Sobia, made from grains, flour, cardamom, cinnamon and dry bread.
• The white Sobia, which is similar to the red one, only the red color of raspberry will be added to it.
• The raisin Sobia, which is made from raisins from Yemen. Cardamom and cinnamon is also added to it.
Amboun said all of Makkah are keen to have Sobia on their tables during Ramadan.
He said one liter of Sobia will cost between SR6 and SR12 depending on its type. The raisin Sobia is the most expensive.
Amboun was happy that he was able to preserve the legacy of his ancestors, especially as his sons also share his passion.
“This means that the tradition of making Sobia will remain in our family for more generations to come,” he concluded.
