The square's "fourth plinth" is one of the city's major showcases for public art.
Past works displayed there include Antony Gornmley's "One and amp; Other," which saw 2,400 members of the public stand atop the plinth for an hour at a time.
The current occupant is Yinka Shonibare's "Nelson's Ship in a Bottle," a colorful replica of Horatio Nelson's HMS Victory.
Finalists unveiled Thursday include Brian Griffths' brick Battenburg cake, Katharina Fritsch's ultramarine cockerel and Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla's "Untitled" — a cash dispenser connected to a pipe organ.
The selected work will be announced early next year.
