According to police spokesman Col. Misfar Al-Juaid, authorities responded to a distress call from a neighbor that a man was holding his family hostage at gunpoint and that shots had been fired.
An elite team of officers wearing bulletproof vests and assault rifles surrounded the area under the command of Maj. Gen. Ali Al-Saadi while negotiators tried to get the man to surrender. After the man refused an offer to communicate via cell phone, police fired tear gas into the habitation, stormed inside and disarmed the suspect.
“The reasons that led the man to hold his family hostage are not clear yet and we are still investigating this case,” said Al-Juaid. “The incident left behind no injuries or deaths and it was executed professionally by the policemen.”
Police did not provide details about the identity or age of the suspect.
