“When the driver of the Train No. 6 saw a man in his 30s rushing toward the train shortly after it left Riyadh, he sounded the whistle repeatedly to warn him off, but he continued running on to the railway line,” said Public Relations Director of the Saudi Railway Organization (SRO) Muhammad Abu Zaid.
“The driver applied brakes but the train hit the man and six carriages passed over him.” Abu Zaid added that the area where the accident took place was eight kilometers from the station and was protected with railings on both sides. The man climbed over the railings to jump on to the tracks. A large number of expatriate laborers from a cement factory live nearby, he said.
Railway police removed the body with the help of the Red Crescent. SRO apologized to the passengers for a two-hour delay in their journey because of the accident, he said. Last week, five Asian workers were killed in an accident on the Riyadh–Hofuf railway route.
