The gender of the child or the identity of the family was not reported.
“The moment the report of the missing child was received, police started looking for the baby in every nook and corner in the center and nearby locations, said Lt. Col. Ziyad Al-Roqaiti, official spokesman of the Eastern Province Police.
It was a tip-off from a laborer who noticed something at the bottom of the shaft that led police to the body.
"Preliminary investigations suggested that the baby fell through a gap in the lift down to the well leading to its death,” the official said.
The door had been left partially open during routine maintenance of the lift.
Police have asked Civil Defense to inspect the safety arrangements at the center.
