Head of Al-Faisaliyah police Col. Abdullah Al-Nufaie said the hospital contacted his station and demanded a permit to bury the fetus.
They told police that they had forgotten about it for 10 days while it lay inside the hospital morgue.
Police said the permit would not be granted until they found out where the fetus came from and how it reached the hospital morgue without police notification.
The manager of the private hospital apparently engaged in a long discussion with Al-Nufaie while trying to obtain the permit.
The police chief insisted on opening an investigation and assigned two officers to the case.
According to police sources, the fetus is only six months old and there were no signs of violence on it. They said the hospital committed a big mistake when they carried out an abortion.
The sources added that police are wondering where the family is and why they did not come forward to bury the fetus.
All evidence, according to police, suggests that the hospital is involved in foul play of some sort.
Police will notify the health authorities in Taif to take action against hospital administration for its alleged negligence, while officers continue to investigate.
The fetus was taken to King Faisal Hospital in Taif.
