“All five incidents are linked” because “the weapon matches” in all of the incidents, said Andrew Ames, a spokesman for the FBI’s Washington Field Office, which is leading the investigation. He declined further comment.
No one has been injured in any of the shooting incidents, which have caused only minor damage. They began in mid-October and all took place either late at night or early morning.
Two separate shootings occurred at a Marine Corps museum in Triangle, Virginia, about 36 miles (58 km) south of Washington, another was at a Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly, Virginia, and a fourth incident shooting was at the Pentagon.
The most recent shooting was discovered on Tuesday morning at the Coast Guard recruiting office.
Because three shootings were at Marine Corps buildings, the FBI has been working on the assumption they were the work of someone who may have been part of the Marine Corps who has a grievance with the military.
Authorities have declined to say what weapon has been used in the shootings, which began on Oct. 17.
The head of the FBI’s Washington office, John Perren, said last week that they do not believe the individual involved wanted to harm anyone, but he warned that such shootings can accidentally lead to disastrous consequences.
