Yanukovych said Friday that modernizing Ukrainian pipelines together with Russian and European investors is a less costly and more effective alternative to the South Stream gas pipeline project.
South Stream, to be launched in 2015, will transport Russian natural gas under the Black Sea to Bulgaria and other European countries, bypassing Ukraine.
Russia is ready to invest in the modernization of Ukraine’s pipeline in return for control.
Yanukovych also defended recent regional elections in Ukraine and said democracy was not under threat here.
