“We are a group of young men and women in Saudi Arabia who have started a campaign to encourage people to pray for King Abdullah who is undergoing medical treatment. We’ve received an incredible response from people both inside and outside the Kingdom,” said a message on the group’s Facebook page.
“We acknowledge King Abdullah's unique personality and leadership. Being a man loved by his community and a man who has given so much to his country and to the Arab and Islamic world, not to mention his positive international role, this reaction is natural and expected,” it added.
The campaign’s organizer, Abdulrahman Al-Mutawe, wants more people to join. “Our main target is people from outside the Kingdom, especially politicians and leaders … we’re also targeting presidents and monarchs of other countries,” he added.
The campaign is not just a Saudi campaign, but an international and global one, said Al-Mutawe. “We don’t want just Saudis to join. We want people from other countries to contribute to this campaign, people from countries that our king has helped when they were emotionally or financially in need. That’s the least they can do to pay back his kindness,” he said.
The Facebook group has attracted a large number of members within a few days. “The campaign is still at the beginning and we’re inviting more people from inside and outside the Kingdom to join and write a message on the group,” said Zahraa Al-Khaldi, a member of the group. “The group got 268 members in just one day and we’re expecting more to join because people love this humble king and they all wish him the best,” she added.
Al-Mutawe also wants US President Barack Obama to join. “We invited the president of the US to join because King Abdullah is being treated there,” he said. “We also want Queen Elizabeth to join along with kings and queens from other countries,” he added.
