No arrests were immediately announced.
Authorities said police were called to the downtown Club Select for a report of a fight and shots broke out shortly after 1:15 a.m. Sunday.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers who initially arrived at the nightclub notified other officers of a large fight and called for backup.
He said some officers fired weapons and investigators are trying to determine whether there was any civilian gunfire.
Guglielmi says no arrests were immediately made but dozens of people had been taken to a police station and were being questioned.
“It was a pretty significant fight from what we understand. A large fight and a number of officers responded,” Guglielmi told The Associated Press. “It ultimately spilled outside into the parking lot.” The police spokesman said the dead officer was 33 but he declined to give his name. He also did not give the name of the other male victim, adding details were sketchy and investigators were on the scene trying to determine what happened.
He said the second officer was shot in the leg and was expected to recover. He added all four of the civilians were in their 20s but he had no further details early Sunday.
“We are investigating the circumstances of the shooting,” Guglielmi said. “We know some officers discharged their weapons. All we can say is multiple people were shot: four civilians, two police officers.” “It’s unclear, the shooting part. We know officers fired their weapons and we’re trying to root out why and whether there was any civilian gunfire,” he said.
He added that dozens of people were undergoing questioning, adding “we have a lot of ground to cover, a lot of people to talk to.”
