Six prisoners were also convicted of receiving drugs and were sentenced to jail terms ranging from one to 17 years.
During the trial, the court heard that the policeman became wealthy over time by supplying drugs to a prisoner, who would then sell them to other prisoners.
The officer was caught after he arrived on the prison premises when inmates and prison guards were being frisked for illegal items.
When the officer sensed what was going on, he abandoned the drugs, which were in two packets of cigarettes, behind the prison’s canteen and advised the prisoner who would sell the drugs on to other prisoners to collect them.
The prisoner then worked out a plan along with five other inmates to collect the drugs. One of the prisoners pretended to be ill and the other four took him to the prison’s hospital, which is located close to the canteen, while the prisoner who would sell the drugs looked on from a distance.
Guards at the prison, however, noticed the men and checked the supposedly ill prisoner who had been covered with a blanket. They realized that the man was not ill and interrogated all five men.
The men then admitted to looking for drugs, and on searching the area the guards found the two cigarette packs. Guards found 299 Captagon pills and small quantities of hashish and heroin inside them.
The guards then questioned the policeman who admitted to supplying drugs.
The prisoner who dealt drugs was sentenced to 17 years in prison, the prisoner who pretended to be sick was handed a four-year sentence, and the other prisoners received one year each in jail.
