The accord was signed by the Jordanian Minister of Energy Khaled Touqan and Chairman of the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority Zafer Alper.
Turkey is the 12th country with which Jordan has signed a nuclear cooperation agreement so far. Over the past two years, Amman concluded similar accords with France, China, South Korea, Canada, Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Argentina, Japan, Romania and Italy.
"Today’s agreement adds more international support for Jordan in its endeavors to possess nuclear know-how in all its aspects — technology, education and training,” Touqan said during the signing ceremony.
“The agreements so far signed by Jordan with leading nuclear countries are intended to provide a political and legal cover that supports Jordan’s possession of the nuclear energy for peaceful uses,” he said.
Jordan’s efforts to conclude a similar agreement with the United States appeared to have faltered after Israel put pressure on Washington to stipulate that Jordan refrains from exploitation of local uranium ores, officials said.
