Ali Almaghwai, senior manager of the airport's passenger
operations department, said they acted on tips to apprehend the suspects, who
were monitored closely until they arrived at the inspection area and were
arrested after a manual inspection by two senior inspectors. The inspectors
found 51 counterfeited credit cards with different names hidden in secret
pockets of the bags.
“Smugglers attempt to use fake credit cards in the local
market. This causes harm to the economy and to society,” added Ali Almaghwai.
Dubai Customs foiled another bid to smuggle fake $100 notes
of $804,000 (AED2.9 million) via Dubai International Airport during the first
week of February. A European tourist was arrested in this case.
In November 2010, Dubai Customs foiled two separate bids to
smuggle fake traveler checks, valued at AED2 million and AED12 million at the
airport and Dubai Cargo Village.
Almaghwai
said Dubai Customs also busted 172 attempts of passengers from 22 nationalities
to smuggle forged credit cards into the emirate last year.
