Parasnis, presently director general of police (housing) succeeded outgoing DGP D. Shivanandan. Patnaik, presently additional director general of police (traffic) replaced Sanjeev Dayal, who has been promoted and posted as the new director general of police (housing) replacing Parasnis.
A special committee consisting of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Home Minister R.R. Patil met Monday morning to select the new state DGP and Mumbai police commissioner.
Patil said that after a long period, the state has a Marathi officer as the state DGP. However, Parasnis has only four months to retire, but the state government may consider extending his tenure by three months. A decision to give Parasnis extension in service has not yet been made, Patil added.
In another development, the Shiv Sena has warned the Maharashtra chief minister to be cautious because his stubborn stand on the Jaitapur nuclear plant project might expose him to people's wrath.
In an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna published on Monday, he warned Chavan that attempts to crush the opposition to the nuclear project will have a backlash and he would face the anger of the people.
