The local authority’s women’s section has launched a two-month campaign on food safety and set up a campaign page on Facebook under the slogan: "Healthy Nutrition in a Safe Environment."
However, visitors to the page think the municipality should go one step further.
Abdullah Al-Khaldi, a Saudi, told Arab News the municipality should set up a special Internet site to publicize any restaurant not committed to food safety.
"Many restaurants in Jeddah are not clean. They do not store food properly in the refrigerators or warehouses," he said.
Al-Khaldi said many restaurants do not have health cards for their staff. “The bathrooms are filthy, the doors and windows are dirty, and there is plenty of expired food,” he said.
Health observers had previously told Arab News that 99 percent of restaurants in Jeddah were fined for failure to abide by hygiene conditions.
A number of residents have called for providing health inspectors with equipment that would enable them to check the safety of food and its suitability for consumption on the spot.
