“The Arab universities have a big responsibility in promoting the concept of moderation in Islam which is one of the basic pillars of ideological security which is fervently being sought by governments and individuals,” said Al-Nuzha.He added that the outcome of the conference will enable Arab universities to play an effective role in consolidating the concept of moderation among their male and female students. “This will further enhance Arab societies,” he added.A number of university rectors, researchers and scholars from Saudi Arabia and abroad are attending the conference.Ali Hood Baabbad, assistant secretary general of the Federation of Arab Universities, said the problems presently facing the youth include, among others, extremism and a lack of tolerance, which result from incorrect educational and cultural upbringing.“The proper planning for the future of our Arab countries is based on the good preparation of our youth who should be the resources of the nation to face upcoming challenges,” he added.Baabbad recalled that the federation, which started with 23 members, now consists of around 224 Arab universities.Abdullah bin Abdul Mohsen Al-Turki, secretary general of the Makkah-based Muslim World League, said Islam is against extremism and fanaticism and has always called for moderation and tolerance. “Moderation has guided the Ummah for many centuries,” he said, while urging universities and higher education institutions to give more attention to promoting moderation.Saleh bin Saeed Al-Harbi, chairman of the organizing committee and dean of the Higher Institute for Imams and Preachers at Taibah University, said the scientific committee received 283 research papers of which 59 were selected for presentation at the event.
