The president received a letter from the mother of one of the 50 students from Altona Middle School who was worried the school might have to cancel the trip if the government shut down. Obama quoted the letter in a late-night speech Friday after lawmakers reached an agreement.
With more budget battles in store, Obama told the students and their teachers that education remains a priority for him and is an area where he wants to increase investments, not make cuts.
