Mahfuz
Huq, 44, was arrested in New Delhi in February and is accused of murdering
19-year-old Todd Kelley, who was found stabbed to death in his home in
Hamilton, Indiana. His girlfriend, who had previously dated Huq, found the
body.
US
authorities say Huq, who was 22 at the time, fled after Kelley's death.
The case
has been featured on the television programs "Unsolved Mysteries" and
"America's Most Wanted."
India
received an extradition request for Huq from the US in March, according to the
official.
Huq, a
naturalized US citizen whose family is from Bangladesh, has filed an appeal in
a lower court in New Delhi.
Under
India's legal system, if the appeal is rejected by the lower court, the suspect
can ask it to be heard by a higher court. If the high court turns down the
appeal, in some cases, the suspect may go as far as appealing to the Supreme
Court.
The
official said that since Huq is wanted on a murder charge, his appeal will most
likely be turned down.
The
appeals process could take several months, or even a year, he said.
