The Geneva-based Committee against Torture says the Irish government should establish “prompt, independent, and thorough investigations” into the abuses that allegedly took place between 1922 and 1996.
The expert panel also says those responsible should be prosecuted and punished “in appropriate cases” and that all victims should receive compensation.
Thousands of young women and girls were sent to the so-called Magdalene Laundries run by the Catholic nuns with little government oversight.
The panel’s periodic report examining Ireland was released Monday.
