The foundation, chaired by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and vice chaired by Princess Ameerah Al-Taweel, presented the check to the Rural Emancipation Society (RES), whose project focuses both on social entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment.
Fifty poor families will receive half the profits from dairy-farming. The other half will be reinvested to help more disadvantaged women join the cooperative farm.
Target groups include women who are disabled, divorced, without income and with children.
The project aims to improve women’s economic and social conditions, creating employment opportunities and to help their children go to school.
The RES is a nongovernment and nonprofit organization initiated in Bangladesh in 2006 and in Australia in 2008. The society focuses on poverty alleviation, education, health, hygiene, and environmental conditions.
The Alwaleed Foundation had also donated $500,000 to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the devastating tropical cyclone “Sidr,” which hit the south and southwest coasts of Bangladesh in 2007.
