Copper output dropped to 308,777 tons for January to May from 326,877 tons in the same period last year, the central bank said in a fortnightly statistics report.
“The decline is seasonal, and we expect the mines to start getting back into full production and recover the marginal losses,” central bank spokesman Kanguya Mayondi said.
Meanwhile, copper exports increased to 334,727 tons from 327,749 tons a year ago, the bank said.
Cobalt output increased to 3,905 tons from 3,425 tons in the same period, while exports rose to 3,864 tons from 3,387 tons, the central bank said.
Foreign mining companies operating in Zambia include London-listed Vedanta Resources, First Quantum Minerals, Glencore International AG and Brazil’s Vale.
