Pearl Harbor chief historian Daniel Martinez says the names of the three Japanese men are being researched, but the plane went down in the area where an excavation crew unearthed the skull in April.
Forensic scientists are conducting tests to determine if the skull belongs to one of 55 Japanese airmen who were killed in the surprise attack.
Martinez says destroyer USS Bagley shot down the torpedo plane in the harbor’s southeast loch, which is where the skull was found during dredging in water between 35 and 40 feet (around 12 meters) deep.
