Dozens of Bangladeshis die each year after allegedly being shot by guards trying to stop smuggling across the 4,000-km border. Bangladesh has long asked that guards instead arrest suspects or use rubber bullets.
India's border guards has now been asked not to fire at people crossing the 4,000-km border, India's Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters in Dhaka.
“We have issued strict instructions to our Border Security Force that in no circumstances should they fire upon anyone trying to cross, either from Bangladesh to India or India to Bangladesh," he said.
