Although mostly ceremonial, Singapore's president has powers to veto senior appointments to the civil service and government-linked firms such as the Government of Singapore Investment Corp (GIC). No candidate has been officially endorsed by any political party, although one of those intending to contest is Tony Tan, a former deputy prime minister.
That could mean the election could end up as an unofficial gauge of the popularity of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), which easily won general elections in May, although its margin of victory shrank from the previous poll.
