Speaking to Arab News, he said there are still possibilities for rains in the southwestern and western highlands such as Jazan, Asir and Baha.
“These rains, accompanied by thunderbolts, may also reach the highlands of the Makkah region such as Taif. The atmosphere will be cloudy in parts of Madinah and there will be strong dusty winds in the Eastern and Central provinces,” Al-Qahtani said. He also warned against lack of visibility in Najran and Asir regions as a result of dusty winds.
Meanwhile, the Civil Defense Department in the Jazan region warned against possible rains accompanied by storms in the afternoon on Sunday.
1st Lt. Musleh Al-Ghamdi said there were heavy rains in Harth, Bish and Tiwal of the region. Rainfalls were also reported in Bani Malik and a number of other principalities in the province, the Saudi Press Agency said.
Al-Ghamdi cautioned the public against coming closer to deep valleys and asked them to take precautionary measures against electricity power cuts and short circuits and inundation of low lying areas.
The Jazan region witnessed flash floods on Friday as a result of heavy showers. Two children were reported to have drowned in Wadi Al-Mighyala in Samita. Many Saudis were trapped in floodwaters and could not reach their homes. A number of trees along streets were uprooted blocking traffic.
Al-Ghamdi confirmed the two drowning incidents in Al-Mighyala and his department had sent a team of swimmers to search for the victims. He said a Saudi citizen helped in recovering one body while the other body was taken out from water by civil defense officers. The bodies were later taken to hospital to complete official formalities.
Al-Ghamdi said the department was coordinating with Jazan Municipality to clean the streets from waters.
Brig. Hassan Al-Qafaili, director of Civil Defense in Jazan, said his department had deployed rescue workers in valleys and flood pathways to save people trapped in floodwaters. He urged the public to keep away from deep valleys and cautioned against possible power cuts and electricity short circuits.
In a related development, many parts of the northern province of Tabuk witnessed heavy rains. On Friday, rains were reported in Al-Ais in the Madinah province.
