Carl Crawford had four hits — giving him hits in six straight plate appearances — and scored three runs.
John Lackey (10-8) scattered six hits over six innings for the Red Sox, who are 9-2 against New York this season and have clinched at least a tie in the season series.
Sabathia (16-6) leads the majors in wins, and his 2.55 ERA coming into the game was tied for fifth. But he fell to 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA against Boston this year after allowing seven runs in six innings on Saturday, giving up nine hits and a walk and striking out six.
Lackey allowed three runs — he also walked two and hit two batters — while striking out five to win his fifth consecutive decision.
In Kansas City, Missouri, Justin Verlander lasted seven innings despite some balky defense behind him and the Detroit Tigers hung on to beat the Kansas City Royals, moving their ace into a tie for the major league lead in wins.
Tigers star Victor Martinez drove in a pair of runs before leaving late with a sprained left knee. He’ll be evaluated again Sunday.
Verlander (16-5) won his fifth straight start and improved to 13-2 in his career against Kansas City. He allowed three runs and five hits while striking out eight. He pulled even with Yankees lefty CC Sabathia for the most victories this year.
Joaquin Benoit pitched out of a jam in the eighth for Detroit and Jose Valverde converted his 32nd straight save to start the season, matching the club record set by AL MVP Willie Hernandez in 1984.
In Minneapolis, Zach Stewart threw six sharp innings in his White Sox debut, Paul Konerko drove in two runs and Brent Lillibridge added a late two-run homer as Chicago beat the Minnesota Twins.
The White Sox secured the first series win against their division rivals since 2009, and first in Minnesota since 2007 by taking the first two games of the weekend series.
Stewart (1-1) was called up from Triple-A Charlotte less than 24 hours before his fourth career major league start. Jake Peavy was originally scheduled to pitch opposite Carl Pavano (6-9), but the White Sox bumped the veteran right-hander to Sunday to make room for the 24-year-old Stewart.
In St. Petersburg, Florida, Brandon McCarthy pitched five-hit ball for eight innings, David DeJesus homered twice and the Oakland Athletics earned a rare road victory by beating the Tampa Bay Rays.
McCarthy (5-5) helped Oakland win for just the eighth time in its last 38 games away from home. He struck out five before Fautino De Los Santos finished up with a hitless ninth.
Coco Crisp stole a career-best four bases, giving the Oakland speedster 37 this season. DeJesus hit a pair of solo homers, while Jemile Weeks and Adam Rosales both had two RBIs.
In Baltimore, Adam Jones hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning after Brandon Morrow was perfect through five, and the Baltimore Orioles rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays.
Chris Tillman (3-4) allowed two runs and four hits over seven innings to earn his first win since May 11. Called up from Triple-A Norfolk before the game for his third stint with Baltimore, he struck out five and walked one to help the Orioles secure their third win in 11 games.
Morrow (8-6) breezed through the first five innings, striking out five and allowing only three balls out of the infield. Forty-four of his 56 pitches during that span were strikes.
In Anaheim, California, Blake Beavan pitched in and out of trouble through eight impressive innings, Trayvon Robinson hit his first major league homer in his second game up from Triple-A, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels.
Former Angels postseason star Adam Kennedy hit a two-run double for the Mariners, who are 6-3 since their franchise-record 17-game losing streak. The victory was only their third in their last 20 games at Angel Stadium.
Beavan (3-2) allowed a run and eight hits, struck out two and walked none in his sixth big league start — the rookie has pitched into the seventh inning in every one of them.
In Arlington, Texas, Michael Brantley hit a go-ahead RBI double and Jason Kipnis homered in Cleveland’s four-run ninth inning as the Indians rallied past the Texas Rangers.
Texas carried a 4-3 advantage into the ninth before the Indians came back against closer Neftali Feliz (1-3), who had his sixth blown save in 28 chances.
Kosuke Fukudome led off the ninth with a double off the glove of right fielder Nelson Cruz , who sprinted back to the warning track and nearly made a spectacular catch.
Ezequiel Carrera’s sacrifice bunt moved Fukudome to third, and Lonnie Chisenhall’s single to right on a 1-2 pitch drove in Fukudome to tie it.
