The farmers were protesting against the government diverting the Pawna River water to other nearby towns for housing projects.
The police opened fire after the mob turned violent and started hurling stones and setting fire to several vehicles.
Police tried to control the unruly mob but when all its efforts failed to pacify the agitating and violent mob, it opened fire killing four protesters.
Protesting against the police firing, the Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Council forced adjournment of the proceedings in both the houses.
In the assembly, Deputy Speaker Vasant Purke, criticized the police firing leading to the death of four farmers and injuries to more than 40 farmers. Purke moved a resolution calling for adjournment of the house for the day as mark of protest against the firing, which was accepted by voice vote.
According to police sources more than 200 farmers and policemen were injured in the violence. The agitating farmers also on Tuesday declared total closure of Talegaon town. All shops and establishments were closed, traffic came to standstill, but local and long distance train services remain uninterrupted.
